We build websites
and custom software.
For businesses that have outgrown off-the-shelf tools. We design and build the website, the system behind it, and the automations that connect the two.
Bring your idea or current challenge. We’ll discuss your goals,
the possible approach, and the next step.

A new enquiry arrives, a CRM contact is created, a review task is assigned, and the dashboard updates. This is an illustrative workflow using fictional people and data.

- Customer portals
- Booking and scheduling systems
- Inventory and order workflows

Every project starts with understanding the problem. We’ll help identify what needs custom development and where existing tools make more sense.
03 / THE WAY WE THINK
Thoughtful software
starts with a conversation.
We start by understanding how your business works, where the friction is, and what a better experience should look like. Then we turn those priorities into a focused plan and working software.
Understand first. Build with purpose.

FounderI design and build everything in this portfolio, end to end. Break the Default is a one-person studio, which means the person you talk to is the person writing the code — no handovers, no account manager in between.

05 / A FEW GOOD QUESTIONS
Before we
say hello.
A little clarity on what comes next.
What kinds of projects do you take on?
We work on websites, web applications, business systems, and integrations. The first conversation helps us understand whether the project fits our capabilities.
Can you improve an existing website or system?
Yes. We can begin by reviewing the current setup and identifying what should be improved, retained, or replaced.
Should my site be React or WordPress?
It depends on who edits it, how distinctive it has to look, and whether it does anything beyond showing pages. Answer eight questions on the “Start here” page and it will tell you which of the three we would build, and why. WordPress is genuinely the right answer for some projects and we will say so.
How much will my project cost?
We quote per project rather than from a price list, because the same page count can mean very different work. Send your answers from the “Start here” page and you get a number in writing after a short call — before anything is built, and with nothing to agree until you have seen it.
Can you take card payments on the site?
Yes, and the advisor asks how you would like it to work. A full cart and checkout, simple payment links, or — if you would rather not hand a percentage of every sale to a gateway yet — bank transfer and manual invoices, built so a gateway can be added later without redoing the checkout.
How long does a project take?
Usually less time than people expect. The applications in the portfolio were each built in one to three days. A larger system, or one that has to talk to software you already use, takes longer — we will give you the estimate before starting rather than after.
Who owns the code and accounts?
Ownership, access, and handover arrangements are documented in the project agreement, including any third-party services or licensed components.
What happens after launch?
We discuss handover, maintenance, and support needs as part of the project scope so responsibilities are clear.
Do I need a complete specification before contacting you?
No. Bring the problem you want to solve or the idea you want to explore. We can discuss what needs defining next.
